There is a point in the life of a company when the question becomes bigger than any one adviser. It may be a decision to raise capital, sell part of the business, enter a new market, prepare for public markets, improve performance before a transaction, or decide what comes next after capital has been raised. At that point, the legal answer, the financial answer, the operating answer and the strategic answer all matter. The difficulty is that the client still has to make one decision.
We kept seeing good businesses surrounded by capable advisers and still carrying the burden of joining the answers together themselves. The lawyer could be right. The accountant could be right. The banker could be right. The operator could be right. Yet the Board or chief executive could still be left without one clear view of what should happen next, in what order, and with what consequences for the business.
0to1 Advisory was created around that gap. We advise on major decisions that affect value, ownership, capital, performance and the balance sheet. We are less interested in placing a client inside a service line than in understanding the decision the client is actually trying to make. Once that is clear, the work can be organised around it.
Capital is a good example. Too many companies begin the capital conversation when they are already under pressure to raise it. At that stage the investor or lender is often seeing the business before the business has done the work needed to present itself well. Financial information may not answer the obvious questions. Governance may still be informal. The capital ask may not be tied clearly to the economics of the business. Management may be carrying a strong company in its head rather than in information another party can examine. Preparation is therefore not a cosmetic step before a transaction. It is part of the transaction.
The same is true after money is raised or a deal is signed. A transaction can change ownership or put capital on the balance sheet, but it does not by itself improve pricing, cash, margins, management information, delivery or governance. The work before and after the transaction often determines whether the transaction creates value. That is why our work spans enterprise improvement, value capture, capital preparation, transaction support, market access and institutional programmes rather than stopping at one point in the process.
Africa also demands practical judgement. Markets are not interchangeable. A structure that works in one country may not travel neatly into another. Companies operate with different levels of market depth, reporting maturity, financing access and regulatory complexity. We believe local context and institutional discipline belong together. Clients should not have to choose between someone who understands the market and someone who can work to a demanding professional standard.
We do not pretend every discipline should sit permanently inside one firm. Where an assignment needs legal counsel, a tax adviser, an auditor, an engineer or another specialist, we bring the right people into the work and keep responsibility clear. The client still has a named 0to1 lead responsible for keeping the assignment joined up.
Trust matters because most of the decisions we work on are consequential and often confidential. A client may be discussing ownership, financing, underperformance, succession, expansion or a transaction before the market knows anything about it. Our job is not to create theatre around that information. It is to exercise judgement, protect confidentiality, identify conflicts, be clear about what we know and what we do not know, and take responsibility for the quality of the advice we release.
0to1 is still being built. We are deliberately building governance, systems, senior expertise and professional relationships around the firm so that the institution can become larger than any one founder, adviser or transaction. That takes time. We would rather be precise about what exists today than borrow credibility from an ambition that has not yet been earned.
When 0to1 accepts an assignment, clients should expect a clear lead, serious preparation, the right expertise around the table and a team that stays close enough to the work to help move it forward.
